The Hippocampal Network

Excitatory impulses reach the “gateway” of the hippocampus – the dentate gyrus – via the perforant pathway from the entorhinal cortex. From there, the granule cells pass them on to the pyramidal cells of the Cornu ammonsis regions (“Ammon's horn,” divided into CA1-3), which are also linked to each other via the Schaffer collaterals. The nerve pathways extend from the hippocampus again via the Alveus pathway, which ends in the fornix.
