This image shows a tangle of nerve cells in the hippocampus. The excitatory neurons glow green. Those colored red have an inhibitory effect on the neuronal discharge pattern due to the neurotransmitter GABA. However, the blue nerve cells are of particular interest to researchers. They indicate that gene transfer has been successful: the neurons produce a blue-glowing recombinant fluorescent protein.
