The extensions of nerve cells run through this image like thousands of tiny flashes of lightning. What you see here are neurons in the hippocampus, one of the oldest structures in the brain in evolutionary terms, which plays a particularly important role in memory formation. The nerve cells develop a highly branched network that enables us to create and retrieve memories.
