Berlin Institute of Health @ Charité
The mission of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is medical translation: findings from biomedical research are transferred into new approaches for personalized prediction, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy; conversely, observations in everyday clinical practice lead to new research ideas. The goal is to achieve relevant medical benefits for patients and citizens. To this end, the BIH is establishing a comprehensive translational ecosystem as a translational research area at Charité, focusing on a cross-organ understanding of health and disease and promoting a translational cultural change in biomedical research. The BIH was founded in 2013 and is funded 90 percent by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and 10 percent by the State of Berlin. The founding institutions, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC), were independent member institutions of the BIH until 2020. Since 2021, the BIH has been integrated into Charité as its third pillar, serving as Charité's translational research division; the MDC is a privileged partner of the BIH.
